Exec Board Position Descriptions
President
The President is responsible for being the leader and face of ALAS. They meet each week with the executive board, with the advisor(s), and can set up meetings with individual chairs for progress checks. The President is in charge of making sure the board is keeping up with tasks and supporting each chair as needed, including but not limited to, interacting with other campus groups, meeting with administration, and assisting in programming planning. The President works with Campus Life and other departments to plan the Latinx Student Summit and the Latino Recognition Ceremony.
Internal Vice President
The Internal Vice President is responsible for affairs within the Latinx community at Washington University. The Internal Vice President keeps track of the Executive Board’s attendance at General Body Meetings, events and Executive Board Meetings. In the cases of absences, the Internal Vice President sends official notifications to unexcused absentees via personal email and alerts the president when an Executive Board Member has exceeded their number of unexcused absences. The Internal Vice President oversees First Year outreach to encourage incoming students to become involved in ALAS. The Internal Vice President fulfills the president’s duties if the president is unavailable and also runs the Amigxs Mentor Program. The Internal Vice President must hold regular meetings with the Heritage Chairs and Social Chairs to provide support and guidance when needed.

External Vice President
The External Vice President is responsible for affairs outside of ALAS, such as, but not limited to, other cultural organizations, graduate groups within Washington University or non-Washington University affiliated bodies. The External Vice President reaches out to these organizations for possible collaborations and serves as a liaison between the groups. The External Vice President responds to all messages on the ALAS Facebook page and emails from outside organizations, unless the task is delegated to another Chair. The External Vice President meets regularly with the Carnaval Chairs, Philanthropy Chair, Publicity Chairs and Social Justice Chairs to ensure they are completing their tasks in a timely manner and provide guidance and support when needed.

Secretary
The Secretary is responsible for taking, and distributing minutes to the Executive Board after every Executive Board meeting. The Secretary is also in charge of keeping the ALAS e-mail account up-to-date and informs the President of any important correspondence. As follows, the Secretary has to send a weekly e-mail to the ALAS student body through the program Mail Chimp and updates the mailing list as needed. In terms of social media, the secretary is responsible for updating the the WashU ALAS Facebook account, and creating Facebook events for every ALAS event. The Secretary is also responsible for maintaining a culture of readership on current events by posting news articles or other media sources on events relating to Latin America and running the Latinx of the Week posts.

Treasurer
The duties of the Treasurer are to manage the finances and accounts of ALAS. The Treasurer must complete Treasurer Training through Student Union. The Treasurer maintains up-to-date records on all ALAS spending accounts, organizes and submits expense requests and reimbursements, manages Student Union loans, assists in all appeals before the Vice President of Finance of Student Union and Treasury, compiles a budget, and organizes fundraising events in coordination with the Presidents and the Secretary.

Carnaval Chairs
Every spring, ALAS presents Carnaval, which is a Latin cultural production of acting, dancing, and singing. ALAS’s mission in having Carnaval is to showcase Latin American culture to the University community and to give the opportunity to learn about and enjoy Latin American music and dance to a wider group of students.The two Carnaval Directors work together to plan, organize, and direct the entire production. In the fall semester, and over winter break, duties involve heading a weekly committee meeting to write the script for the show, holding auditions to select choreographers, hiring staff, and working with the Publicity Chair to create advertisements. In the spring semester, duties involve organizing and holding auditions for 300+ students, supervising the progress of each dance and the skit, managing the Carnaval budget and ordering costumes, organizing and leading all technical and dress rehearsals for the show, working with Edison Theater, making sure the show runs smoothly, and maintaining the costume closet in the ALAS suite. In order to plan and organize the show, the Carnaval Chairs need to be skilled in leading and delegating to the rest of the Executive Board, working with Event Services and ReserveASpace, managing the ALAS website information, working with Dining Services for decorating and special menus, creating registration forms for auditions and T-shirt/DVD orders, and extensive knowledge of SIL regulations and Student Union financing. The Chairs are also responsible for convening a Skit Committee.

Social Chairs
The Social Chairs are responsible for planning several fun, social events throughout the year, in addition to supporting other exec members with their events. The first large-scale event is the formal, typically held at the end of the fall semester. The largest event is Carnaval After Party. The Social Chairs are responsible for finding venues, food, transportation, and security for the events, as well as collaborating with Student Union to approve events and coordinate ticket sales. Social Chairs are responsible for organizing and convening a Social Committee for the purposes of aiding the planning and execution of outlined events, if needed. Social Chairs should also plan at least two events throughout the semester. Social Chairs must be responsible contacts at any event where alcohol is served.

Philanthropy Chair
The Philanthropy Chair has to promote within the Executive Board and the General Body the importance of community service and of connecting with the local and global community. Philanthropy Chair organizes at least two community service events per semester. The Philanthropy Chair organizes El Mercado in the Fall Semester while also ensuring to promote the charitable aspect of the event. The Philanthropy Chair coordinates the philanthropic efforts of ALAS for Carnaval in the Spring semester. The Philanthropy Chair is responsible for organizing and convening a Philanthropy Committee for the purposes of aiding the planning and execution of outlined events, if needed.

Heritage Chairs
The Heritage Chairs are in charge of events that help to promote awareness and appreciation of Latino culture. In September, the Heritage Chairs will organize events related to Hispanic Heritage Month throughout late September and early October. In February, the Heritage Chairs will be plan and execute the Latino Research Symposium, which showcases the intellectual contributions made by Latinos or about Latinos. In addition, the Heritage Chairs plan one other event to be held each semester that will focus on academics or current events. The nature of these events will be left to the Chairs’ discretion. Heritage Chairs are responsible for organizing and convening a Heritage Committee for the purposes of aiding the planning and execution of outlined events.

Publicity Chairs
Publicity Chairs are responsible for the art direction and campus presence of ALAS. Through a variety of graphic media, the Chairs strive for visibility and strength of on-campus presence for the organization. The expectation is to have at least a working knowledge of photoshop, if not various other programs including Illustrator and InDesign. Publicity Chairs must maintain the ALAS website. Publicity Chairs are responsible for organizing and convening a Publicity Committee for the purposes of aiding the planning and execution of marketing efforts.

Social Justice Chair
The Social Justice Chair addresses controversies, natural disasters and current topics within the Latinx community to help bring up these conversations within the Washington University setting and inform the community of the issues occurring throughout the world. The Social Justice chair provides a perspective of political awareness and social equality at all General Body Meetings and Executive Board Meeting. The Social Justice Chair also arranges for the Executive Board training mentioned under the General Responsibilities of the Executive Board of ALAS. The Social Justice Chair plans one event per semester on a current issue within the Latinx community. Since the Social Justice Chair relies heavily on the current events, the Social Justice Chair may mold the position to how they feel fit within the school year and listens to the General Body’s needs on various issues.
